Teaching Philosophy

As a researcher committed to the goals of equity and social justice, my teaching is guided by ideas of culturally responsive/relevant/sustaining pedagogy (CRP/CSP). Four interrelated principles guide my approaches: (a) seeing knowledge as constructed and teaching as drawing knowledge from students’ prior life and learning experiences, (b) building a safe and supportive learning environment to ensure that students take charge of their learning and participate in co-constructing knowledge, (c) constructing a democratic and inclusive space in the classroom where decision-making power is shared and multiple ways of deliberating ideas are recognized and valued, and (d) prioritizing assessment for learning and using various assessment approaches to scaffold student learning.

As an educator inspired by CRP/CSP, I encounter uncertainties and fear that require reflection and resolution as I apply these theories of teaching to research methods or program evaluation classes. Along my teaching journey, connecting with and learning from students through genuine dialogues has helped me continue to grow and deepen my commitment.
